According to StatCounter, Google’s Chrome has overtaken Apple’s Safari as the 3rd most prevalent Internet browser in the United States. This announcement comes just a few months after Chrome performed the same coup in the overall world market.
According to the report, Chrome has captured 8.97% of the domestic market, barely edging out Safari at 8.88%. Both browsers still trail the two big dogs in the market – Internet Explorer and Firefox – by a significant margin.
Chrome’s success is remarkable when you consider a few factors. First, Chrome is still just a baby. Its first stable public release came on December 11, 2008. Other browsers have been in the game much longer, but Chrome has been able to eat away at their market share and capture customers.
Second, Chrome has managed to leapfrog Safari despite the fact that Safari comes bundled with every Apple computer. Considering Apple controls a solid 10% of the computer market, and Chrome isn’t included in any bundles at all, this is quite a feat.
Will Chrome eventually challenge Firefox and Internet Explorer? It’s hard to tell. It’s still got a long way to go to dethrone either of the two major players, and Mozilla continues to provide quality competition (Microsoft not so much). But either way, one thing is certain: for the foreseeable future, Chrome is here to stay.
